About Firefly

Welcome to Firefly Solar, the company behind the UK’s first fully mobile, fully reliable solar power solution for the events industry. Firefly is a Brighton based Community Interest Company that provides renewable power solutions and high end technical production services to a number of different sectors, from live music festivals and private parties to conferences and trade shows.

Firefly are the creators of the ‘Orion’ solar powered generator series, the UK’s first fully mobile, fully reliable solar generators of their type offering up to 15KVA of mains voltage power. The Orion system is used to power a vast variety of equipment including PA systems, lighting, AV screens and computers, but it will power anything with a plug; from fruit juicers to power tools. Orion is powered entirely by the sun and its battery backup system means it will keep running into the night. The system is silent running and is safer than petrol or diesel generators as there is no combustion process.
Firefly Solar tours the largest, most high tech solar event stage in the UK, powered entirely by the sun. The stage uses cutting edge LED lighting and top-end Turbosound PA, paired with Orion to deliver industry standard production with ZERO emissions. The Firefly Stage is available in a number of formats depending on the requirements of the event. It comes as a complete package and goes out on the Saddlespan S5000 for audiences upto 5000 and the S2000 for audiences upto 2000. When looking for an indoor entertainment space, The Firefly Stage will sit in any Big Top or Duospan (S2000 or S5000). If you already have a structure booked, Firefly can complete all technical production required in a venue of your choosing. As all our services are modular we can provide a renewable solution to go with any event.
In 2008 the Firefly Stage was present at all three of Virtual Festival’s big award winners; Glastonbury (Best Large festival), Lovebox Weekender (Best Medium festival) and The Secret Garden Party (Best Small festival). Thanks to the versatility of the Orion technology, three different formats of the Firefly Stage were produced; the first on a Saddlespan S2000, the second on an S5000 and the third in a beautiful geo dome.
2008 also saw Firefly Solar working for a number of Third Sector clients producing free-to-attend and charity events including Sutton and Kent County Councils, BBC Springwatch and The Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice.
As well as their solar powered music stage, Firefly Solar are specialists in a number of different technical production areas, including solar cinemas and eco conferences. In 2009 Firefly technically produced the world premiere of ‘The Age of Stupid,’ the cutting edge eco movie from director Franny Armstrong (McLibel). Held in a temporary structure in the middle of Leicester Square, the solar cinema was the largest of its kind, helping the event produce just 1% of the CO2 usually associated with a movie premiere.
We are actively working towards the new British Standard 8901, the new government guidelines that specify the requirements for a sustainable event management system. Designed to help the events industry conduct its business in a more sustainable way, BS8901 establishes a framework of management best practice, allowing organisations to identify and engage creatively with their social, environmental and economic impacts.
Ethics
Firefly Solar Community Interest Company was set up to help the events sector reduce its carbon footprint. Firefly is a carbon neutral company operating all of its own transport using UK produced Bio fuels from recycled cooking oil. Offices are powered using renewable energy. All office supplies are sourced locally and ethically. Carbon emissions are monitored and offset. We are an equal opportunities employer. Any surplus funds generated through business directly subsidise provision of our services at community and free to attend events. Any surplus thereafter is used to develop new renewable energy products.

Solar Aid Goes Mobile!

Following the success of the Sun Hut, a solar information centre and static mobile phone charging station powered by solar energy, Solar Aid is set to be the Big Chill’s charity partner for 2009. As a result of this partnership, Firefly has been commissioned by Solar Aid to develop a pair of roaming solar mobile phone charging units for use at the event this summer.

The aim of the project is to have a set of roaming phone chargers from which the public can receive a 15 minute booster charge which will enable them to send urgent text messages or make a call to find their lost friends.

Best of all, the profits will go straight back into bringing solar energy to the developing world. So, everyone is a winner; rural communities in Africa, the environment and the disorientated festival-goer!

Heading up the design of the charger, Paul Brain explains, “It is really exciting that Firefly have been given this opportunity to showcase the flexibility of the company and our ability to push the solar in different directions. The challenge of this project was finding the balance between having enough power whilst remaining light enough to move around a festival site. I think the design has achieved both goals.”

This project marks the start of a number of new solar products in development at Firefly Solar. Later in the summer Firefly plan to launch the new Pictor Generator, a smaller solar generator capable of running smaller appliances.
